abim member companies take their health and safety responsibilities very seriously, particularly with regard to dust exposure in the workplace.

Therefore, abim has actively offered assistance to the Health & Safety Executive during its various consultation exercises in the last few years.

abim also hosted an occupational allergy seminar for the industry and produced Occupational Allergy Guidelines and a model Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).

The guidelines aim to ensure companies involved in the bakery ingredients sector are fully aware of their regulatory obligations in terms of informing employees and customers about the appropriate handling of a range of potential sensitising agents.

The sub-committee Chairman represents abim on the Health & Safety in Bakeries Liaison Committee and on the FDF Occupational Health & Safety Panel.

The European Dimension

abim, in conjunction with our European sector organisation FEDIMA, participates in a European Working Group that has:

· put forward recommendations for equipment to evaluate a material’s propensity to give rise to dust

· proposed a method for measuring the amylase component of dust in the absence of a validated methodology, and

· drawn up a draft proposal for a training programme on how to minimise exposure to dust in the ingredients and baking industries.
